Abstract

1,256,610. Depositing catalytic components on carriers. STAMICARBON N.V. 19 Dec., 1969 [20 Dec., 1968], No. 62030/69. Heading B1E. A catalyst composition comprising a catalytically active material supported on a carrier is prepared by forming in an aqueous medium a soluble complex derived from a compound of a catalytically active metal and an oxidisable organic complex-forming compound, forming a suspension of carrier particles in this solution, agitating the suspension whilst introducing an oxidation agent under conditions of a predetermined range of pH and temperature, the oxidation reacting with the oxidisable component of the complex homogeneously and sufficiently slowly such that the catalytically active component of the complex precipitates substantially entirely on the suspended carrier particles and separating the thus loaded carrier particles from the suspension. Specified organic complexing agents are: E.D.T.A; nitrilo-triacetic acid; imino-diacetic acid; bis- 2-amino-ethyl-ether-N,N,N',N' tetracetic acid; amino-alcohols, e.g. amino ethyl alcohol; amion acids, e.g. glycine and glutamic acid; and diamines, e.g. ethylene diamine and propylene diamine. Specified oxidation agents are hydrogen peroxide and salts of halogen oxyacids, e.g. sodium hypochlorite. Metal components specified are iron, copper and silver, the preferred carrier material being silica. The catalyst may be further treated if required, eg. by calcination or reduction of a catalytic component to the corresponding metal. In the Examples- (i) an iron (III) oxide or silica catalyst' contained some sodium chloride because of the method of preparation and (ii) a silver or silica catalyst contained some carbon originating from the complexing agent.
