Abstract
1284276 Conjoint control of engines and propellers KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERSTAD AB 20 Aug 1969 [21 Aug 1968] 41439/69 Heading B7V [Also in Division G3] In a system in which the speed of ships' engines is automatically controlled by adjustment of a fuel supply pump, the pump setting is compared with a predetermined limit value and if this is exceeded a signal in the form of a pulse train is provided which operates a servosystem to adjust the pitch of the propeller(s) in a stepwise manner, one step per pulse, or if the limit is grossly exceeded continuous adjustment may be made until the setting is within the range of stepped operation. As shown, the pitch of a single propeller 4 is controlled from the bridge by line 7 or by the servo 6 in response to pulses generated at 9 when either of sensors 11 on respective engines 1, 2 detect that the fuel pump setting has exceeded upper or lower limits. Alternatively, the sensors may respond to one limit only. 10 is a "selector" and either activates the pulse generator 9 or transmits a continuous correction signal on line 12. The servo system 6 is electro-hydraulic (Fig. 2, not shown) and is arranged so that the magnitude of each step adjustment depends upon the prevailing pitch, being zero when the pitch is zero. The pulse generator incorporates a delay so that short term errors are ignored. Both the pulse duration and frequency are said to be adjustable, and the engine speed is kept constant by undisclosed means.
