1284165 Coupling of conjugated diene polymers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 5 Aug 1970 [7 Aug 1969] 37796/70 Addition to 1276320 Heading C3P The molecular weight of a conjugated diene polymer is increased by forming a lithium terminated polymer by reaction of the diene with an organo-monolithium compound then coupling the "lining polymer" units by reaction with 0À25 to 10 moles per lithium atom of an ester of a monohydric phenol and a monocarboxylic aromatic acid. The process is particularly useful for coupling two-block polymers of formula A-B 1/2 -Li to form an A-B-A polymer, where A is a styrene or α-methylstyrene polymer block and B is an elastomeric block based on a conjugated diene, e.g. butadiene or isoprene. An example describes the use of phenyl benzoate as the coupling agent for a styrene-butadiene block polymer.
