Abstract

1284162 Laminating apparatus DORNIER AG 29 July 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 36643/70 Heading B5N Apparatus for the manufacture of a curved sandwich panel, e.g. for aircraft components, made of layers of material bonded with a synthetic resin, the shape of which panel conforms to a master pattern, comprises a rigid metal frame 5, a synthetic resin laminate form 3 and supports 8 each mounted on and extending away from the frame and supporting the form, the form corresponding in shape to the master pattern, and the supports being deformable to accommodate differential expansion of form and frame. The laminate form may be produced by applying a layer of synthetic resin mixture on to the master pattern, applying a laminating resin to this layer, reinforcing it with a glass filament fabric or glass fibre mat, and when the synthetic resin laminate has hardened removing it from the master pattern as a negative moulding form. Frame 5 having reinforcing webs 6 has aligned bores in which hollow supporting struts 8 are inserted, the ends of the struts being closed by support plates fixed slightly inclined to conform to the contour of form 3 or being fitted with ball bearing plates to enable the plate to adjust to the different parts of form 3. The struts 8 are fixed in position by means of adhesives. Runners 7 are mounted on the underside of frame 5 so that the apparatus can be moved into an autoclave to harden the resin. Sandwich panel 4 is built up layer by layer in frame 14 and a foil which extends beyond the edges is applied as the top layer and held in position by clips 16 on outer frame 15 so that by removal of air by suction, bonding of the sandwich panels free from air bubbles is achieved.
