Abstract

1283545 Mercury cathode electrolysis of brine KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO K K 28 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 42794/69 Heading C7B In the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride using a mercury cathode cell in which amalgam withdrawn from the cell 1 is passed to a denuding tower 4 from which mercury recovered is returned to the cell via pump 7 and conduit 8, wash water also passes through the conduit 8 with the mercury, to be separated therefrom by a weir 12, the wash water and a small portion of mercury passing over the weir and being recirculated to a surge tank 5 positioned between the denuding tower 4 and the pump 7, and mercury retained by the weir 12 being supplied to the cell 1. To prevent too high an alkalinity being reached by the wash water a small portion thereof is passed via pump 15 to the denuding tower 15, fresh wash water being supplied to the system via inlet 6. The system may be applied to cells in which the mercury flows longitudinally or transversely through the cell.
