Abstract

1283436 Preparation of sec. alcohols from olefins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 18737/70 Heading C2C Mixed sec. alcohols are made from olefin mixtures present in a paraffin stream by reacting the olefins (and paraffin) with a sulphating agent, converting the resulting sec. alkyl acid sulphates to their neutral alkali metal salts, treating the produced mixture with an aryl or alkarylsulphonate hydrotrope, the alkyl substituents, if any, of which contain a total of not more than 8 carbon atoms, whereby the paraffin is separated into an organics phase and the alkyl sulphate into an aqueous phase, hydrolysing the alkyl sulphates without prior removal of the hydrotrope and separating alcohols from the hydrolysis medium.
