Abstract

128,336. Pickering, J. T. April 19, 1918. Spray carburettors.-In a spray carburettor, two oppositely-faced valves are provided in the fuel passage leading to the nozzle outlet and are carried by the same suction-actuated spindle, one valve serving to control the flow of fuel, and the other to cut it off when the suction ceases. The. carburettor casing A is jacketed at a<6> and has an air inlet controlled bv a throttle valve B, the mixture leaving at a<2>. Between the air inlet and mixture outlet is a conical gauze diaphragm K supported by a cage k<1> through the apex of which passes the valve spindle C. This spindle is attached to a piston J<1> sliding in a cylinder H<1> and open to the atmosphere at the top, and carries the two valves D, E of which D is the cut-off and E the control valve, the seating d of the cut-off valve being adjustable. The piston and valves, which are loaded bv a spring S so as to keep the cut-off valve, closed, are lowered by suction, the extent of the downward movement being limited by nuts g<3> and a rotatable sleeve g<4>, cam-surfaces on the underside of which engage similar surfaces on a boss a<4> carried by the cover a<5>. This construction is particularly adapted for engines with medium compression. In a modified construction for use with higher compression pressures, the piston J<1> is smaller in diameter, and its cylinder is open to the atmosphere at the bottom and to the suction pressure through ports in its wall at the top. The piston is therefore raised by suction, and the arrangement of the valves D, E is consequently the reverse of that shown in Fig. 3. In a still further modification for use with low compression pressures, the piston J<1> is replaced by a flexible diaphragm extending over the whole of the area closed by the cover a<5>.
