Abstract

1283021 Evaporators; rotary drum type APV MITCHELL (DRYERS) Ltd 11 Nov 1970 [13 Jan 1970] 1580/70 Heading B1B Liquid is evaporated from a solution or suspension of solid material by spreading a film of the solution or suspension on the exterior of a horizontal rotating drum 21 the interior of which is supplied with hot combustion gases from a burner 40 projecting axially into a hollow trunnion 25 at one end of the drum. The dried material is removed from the drum by a doctor blade (not shown). Gas or oil is supplied to the burner through pipe 48; and combustion air is supplied through pipe 45. The hot gases from the burner-flame flow through cylindrical baffle 30, pass outwardly towards the inner curved surface of the drum, flow through the annular space between the drum and the outer surface of baffle 30, and pass through the annular passage between the trunnion 25 and nozzle 41 to flue 38. The temperature of the flame can be controlled by supplying dilution air through pipe 44 to nozzle 41; and the baffle 30 can be adjusted axially to enable a nearly constant temperature to be achieved all along the cylindrical body of the drum. The feed solution or suspension may be applied to the drum by a dip trough, a transfer roller or a spray device. The doctor blade may comprise four side-by-side blade sections each pivotally supported by a beam. The drum may be used for drying milk, potato slurry, dyestuffs, and ceramic slips.
