Abstract

1282887 Polyolefin derivatives LUBRIZOL CORP 16 June 1969 [3 July 1968] 30409/69 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Polyolefin derivatives suitable as dispersants for lubricating and fuel oils may be prepared by reacting (I) polyolefin substituted mono- or polycarboxylic acylating agents with (II) not more than one mole per equivalent of I of where R is an organic radical of valence n + 1 or, where n is 1, may be a direct linkage, and n is 1 to 3; X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>11</SP> are independently O= or R 1 N=; when X<SP>1</SP> is O = then Y is or where m is 0 or 1 to 8; when X<SP>1</SP> is R 1 N= then R 1 is -(R<SP>11</SP>-NR<SP>1</SP>)m-R<SP>11</SP>-NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>1</SP> and Y is -NR<SP>1</SP>-(R<SP>11</SP>-NR<SP>1</SP>) m -R<SP>11</SP>-NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>1</SP> or R 1 and Y together form where q is 0 or 1 to 8; when X<SP>11</SP> is O = then Z is O-M<SP>+</SP>, halo, alkoxy or Y as defined when X<SP>1</SP> is O = and M<SP>+</SP> is the cation of an amine; when X<SP>11</SP> R 1 N = then Z and R 1 are as Y and R 1 when X<SP>1</SP> is R 1 N=; when X<SP>1</SP> and X<SP>11</SP> are both O= and R separates the attached groups by 2 or 3 carbon atoms then Y and Z taken together can be where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, C 1-10 hydrocarbyl or -(R<SP>11</SP>-O) r -H where r is 1 to 10, the reactant containing at least one such group per molecule; and R<SP>11</SP> is C 1-10 hydrocarbylene. Preferred reactants (I) are derived from maleic and fumaric acids and maleic anhydride; and polypropylene, polyisobutylene or propylene/isobutylene copolymers and their chlorinated derivatives; and preferred reactants (II) are derived from alkylene dicarboxylic acids and alkylene polyamines containing at least one hydroxy-alkyl group, or alkylene polyamines and an alkylene oxide or epihalohydrin. The products may be after treated with aliphatic acids, aliphatic aldehydes or epoxides. Many suitable starting materials are specified and examples describe the preparation of products from (T) polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride, polypropenyl succinic anhydride, polyisobutenyl acrylic acid and isobutylene/propylene copolymer substituted succinic anhydride; (II) reaction products of adipic, malonic, glutaric, sebacic, terephthalic, diglycolic, iminodiacetic, 1,4-phenylene diacetic and azelaic acids with N- hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine, N-hydroxypropyl propylene diamine, N- hydroxypropyl ethylene diamine, N-(4-hydroxyoctyl) ethylene diamine, N-(3-hydroxy-heptyl) tetramethylene diamine, N - (3 - hydroxypentyl) trimethylene diamine, N - (2 - hydroxyheptyl) tetramethylene diamine, N - (2 - hydroxy - 2 - phenylethyl) ethylene diamine, N - (2 - tolyl - 3- hydroxypropyl) propylene diamine, and reaction products of ethylene diamine/ethylene oxide, tetraethylene pentamine/ethylene oxide, diethylene triamine/triethylene tetramine-/ethylene oxide/propylene oxide, tetraethylene pentamine/epichlorohydrin, ethylene polyamines/ propylene oxide, diethylene triamine/styrene oxide and triethylene tetramine/styrene oxide; optionally post-reacted with propylene oxide, formic acid, formaldehyde and butyraldehyde.
