Abstract
1282133 Automatic control of rolling ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO K K 7 Nov 1969 54758/69 Heading G3R Variations in the shape of an illuminated line across the width of material being rolled are detected and utilized to adjust the pressure between the rolls across the width of the material to correct variations in the shape of the material being rolled. In Fig. 2, a beam of light from a source 12, or a number of sources in a line, is projected to form an image 13 across rolled material 10 ahead of or behind rolls 17, 18. The image is scanned by a TV camera 14 and signals corresponding to the longitudinal position of the image at three points 1, 2, 3 across its width are derived from the camera output at 1a-3a, sampled at 1b-3b, and compared with desired positions corresponding to a straight image at 1c-3c. Any non-linearity of the image and hence distortion of the material in the central area produces an error signal at 2c which is amplified at 2d and applied to correct the distortion by adjusting a valve 2e varying the pressure in hydraulic cylinders A 1 A 2 between roll 17 and a back-up roll 19. Similarly any distortion of the material at the edges produces an error signal at 1c or 3c which is amplified at 1d or 3d and applied to correct the distortion by adjusting a valve 1e or 3e varying the pressure in a hydraulic cylinder B 1 or B 2 between the work rolls. In a modification, deviation of the line at any of three positions is detected by photo-transistors responsive to light from the line or from an image produced on a TV monitor screen such as 15. In the former case photo-potentiometers may be employed and in the latter the error signals modify the datums of pressure controlling servo-systems associated with the hydraulic cylinders.
