Abstract

1282103 Aircraft arresting means BRITISH INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS Ltd 30 Sept 1969 [7 Oct 1968] 47410/68 Heading B7G [Also in Division E1 Means, extending alongside or across the end of a runway, for decelerating aircraft comprises a bed of non-resilient, cured crushable foam of aminoplast material, so that the translational energy of the aircraft having a compressive strength of 1 to 50 p.s.i. and a density of 0.25 to 10 lbs. per. cu. ft. is dissipated in crushing the foam and thus the aircraft 1 is retarded or arrested. Fig. 1 shows a bed of foam 10 secured at the end of a runway 12. The foam may be preprepared in a factory in blocks, or made in situ either on the surface of the ground or in recesses in the ground. The foam may be coated with paints to improve its weather and bacteria resistance, and flame retardants may be incorporated in the foam. Also the foam may be secured to the ground.
