Abstract

1282081 Papermaking ABITIBI PAPER CO Ltd 5 Jan 1970 [3 March 1969 408/70 Headings D2A D2B A method of producing newprint paper having a reduced tendency to shed list comprises passing newsprint through the dryer section of the papermaking machine, contacting an unsupported run of the web with an applicator roll 22 arranged so that the web 10 wraps partially around the surface, supplying a liquid adhesive 26 to the applicator roll surface, the web being sufficiently dry at the point of application to permit the adhesive to secure list, the amount applied being insufficient to adversely effect the ability of the paper to absorb ink during printing; and subsequently effecting further drying of the web in the dryer section. The applicator roll 22 is fed by roll 24. One of these rolls is resilient, whilst the other has a hard grooved surface. The grooved roll preferably has intersecting grooves, giving a diamond pattern. The adhesive preferably includes starch but may also include soya protein, casein, melamine-formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, styrenebutadine latices or polyvinyl alcohol.
