Abstract

1281861 Electric heating TRONAPPLICS Ltd 21 Jan 1970 3001/70 Addition to 1270250 Heading H5H [Also in Division G3] In an arrangement as described in the parent Specification in which a heating apparatus comprises at least two elements fed with pulses of opposite polarity and alternating in time, the elements are of elongated form wound with resistive wire of diameter 0À015 inch diameter or less, or non-circular conductors of equivalent cross-sectional area, and preferably 0À0076 inch or less or equivalent. Each element may comprise a number of conductors in parallel. Where used for liquid heating, elements may be embedded in refractory, fibrous mineral, or particulate mineral material. Where for air heating elements may be disposed in a duct with a fan passing air downwardly at a rate to prevent the elements glowing red, and with a thermal cut-out to sense hot air rising if the fan fails. A heating element may comprise a plurality of conductors arranged in open helical coils supported by rods 24 of heat insulating material carrying perforated spaced discs 26, the rods being held by nuts 36 to board 34. Terminals 30, 32 &c. are provided and may be connected by conductors of printed circuit type. It is considered that the downstream surface of small diameter conductors dissipate heat more effectively because there may be less tendency for air flowing to break away; if there is break away then the close proximity of down and up stream sides will permit sufficient conduction of heat from one to the other surface.
