Abstract
1281508 Uranium dioxide from hexafluoride WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 22 June 1970 [18 July 1969] 30139/70 Heading C1A A process for converting uranium hexafluoride to uranium dioxide comprises reacting uranium hexafluoride with steam and hydrogen in the molar proportion of 1:2-8:1-8 respectively in a fluidized bed containing uranyl fluoride and uranium oxide and heated at 475-600‹ C., mixing the reaction products, comprising UO 2 F 2 and U 3 O 8 , with additional steam and hydrogen to provide 4-12 moles steam and 1-6 moles hydrogen per mole of uranium in a second fluidized bed heated at 575-650‹ C., passing the reaction products to a third fluidized bed and reacting with further steam and hydrogen to provide 2-11 moles steam and 0À5-6 moles hydrogen per mole of uranium, and heating at 575-650‹ C.: the uranium dioxide so formed is capable of being formed into pellets having a density of 90-96% of theoretical; recovery is greater than 99À9% uranium. The residual fluorine content may be 0À011-0À015% wt. If desired for a higher purity product a fourth and subsequent fluid bed can be employed under conditions similar to that in the third bed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,210,057.
