Abstract

1281381 Heat resistant coating R W GUNNERMAN 10 March 1969 [14 March 1968 30 Sept 1968 (2)] 12589/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] A surface heat barrier is made by (1) bonding together as an intimate mixture particles of A a source of available carbon and B an alkaline earth sulphate, and (2) reacting A and B together, thus forming a surface heat-barrier glaze of the alkaline earth sulphide. A may be a thermosetting resin, e.g. phenolic, ureaformaldehyde, or melamine-formaldehyde resin, or diallyl phthalate polymers or prepolymers; A may additionally comprise polyvinyl acetate, which acts to reduce the crystal interlock. A may be in the form of phenolic resin balloons. B may be hydrated BeSO 4 , MgSO 4 , or CaSO 4 ; or SrSO 4 or BaSO 4 ; it is considered possible that RaSO 4 would function in the same way. The mixture may comprise phenolic resin balloons and a gypsum/water matrix; the volume ratio balloons; gypsum may be 70:30. Step (2) may be performed by application of a plasma-jet flame or by using propane burners. A reinforcing grid may be applied to the mixture before it sets, to resist formation of fissures and cracks during the application of heat.
