1280432 Polyene compounds F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 16 July 1970 [1 Aug 1969 31 Oct 1969] 34484/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Polyene compounds of the general formula in which the R-residue has the same significance and each represents the formyl residue, an alkoxy carbonyl residue or the 4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-trien-1-yl residue are prepared by reacting in the presence of an ethylene oxide which may be substituted by C 1 -C 5 alkyl, either a dialdehyde of the general formula in which a and b stand for zero, with a phosphonium salt of the general formula in which c stands for 1, Y represents an aryl or di(C 1 -C 4 alkyl)amino group and Z represents a halogen or hydrosulphate ion, or a dialdehyde of Formula II in which a and b represent 1 with a phosphonium salt of the formula in which c stands for zero, R<SP>1</SP> represents the 2,6- dimethyl-hepta-1,5-dien-1-yl residue, or a dialdehyde of Formula II in which a represents zero and b represents 1, with a phosphonium salt of the general formula Examples describe the preparation of crocetin dialdehyde, crocetin dicetyl, dimethyl and diethyl esters.
