1280348 Selective embossing K TAKEBE 16 July 1969 35929/69 Heading B6F A machine for stamping indicia in medals includes a disc 13 having holes 58 therein for receiving a fingertip, a required stamp 26 being selected by rotating the disc until the fingertip strikes a stop 57 which moves slightly to initiate operation of an electromagnetically powered hammer 35. A medal is placed in a receiver 16 wherein it is firmly located by a rubber ring 68. Engagement of the stop 57 by a finger pivots a hook (54, Fig. 3) into engagement with a stamp 26 to locate the required stamp accurately beneath the hammer 35, and causes operation of a switch (93) whereby the electromagnet (36, Figs. 3, 4) driving the electromagnet is energized. Simultaneously a second electromagnet (79, Fig. 5) is energized, to pre-set letter spacing mechanism. The hammer 35 operates a switch (94, Figs. 3, 4) during its impression movement, to de-energize the electromagnets (36, 79) to permit the return of the hammer and to allow a pawl (72, Fig. 5) to rotate a ratchet wheel 71 one step. The ratchet wheel 71 is fixed to a shaft 69 bearing the medal receiver 16 to position the medal ready for a subsequent impression. When the required impressions have been made on the medal, a switch (100, Fig. 1) is closed, whereby an electromagnet 90 is energized to eject the medal from the receiver 16 through a plunger 86, 87. A member 98 fixed to the core of the electromagnet 90 operates a switch 96 whereby the machine is switched off. The machine may be coin operated, a stop (44, Fig. 3) being positioned between stamps (26) to prevent operation of the machine until a coin is inserted.
