Abstract

1280092 Coated metal MORTON INTERNATIONAL Inc 4 Aug 1970 [18 Aug 1969] 37575/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C4 and C7] A coating composition consists of a magnesium oxide having a surface area of 5-50m<SP>2</SP>/g (B.E.T.) and from 3.5 to 20 wt% of an alkaline earth metal fluoride. The alkaline earth metal may be Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba. A continuous sheet of silicon steel may be coated with the composition in the form of a slurry which is then dried; the steel is then formed into coils and annealed. The slurry preferably has a solids content of 5 to 20% by wt, and may be applied by immersion, brushing or spraying. The coating may be dried in air before annealing. The annealing may take place in a hydrogen atmosphere.
