1279743 Composite elastic bands AUTOMATIC BRAIDING CO (NOTTINGHAM) Ltd 7 Dec 1970 [6 Jan 1970] 580/70 Heading A3V [Also in Division B5] A composite elastic band capable of being stretched elastically from a relaxed condition comprises an elastic ribbon 1, 2 to which stretch-limiting, flexible, strip material 4, 5 or 6 of non-woven fabric, is secured in such a manner that in the relaxed condition of the band the strip material is longitudinally puckered or compressed in the lengthwise direction of the band by the elastic ribbon. The extent of stretching of the composite elastic band is limited by the strip material. The elastic ribbon is secured to the strip material by adhesive or stitching along the lines S, said composite elastic band may incorporate at least two elastic ribbons 1, 2 disposed edge to edge with a gap therebetween, having strip material 6 of sufficient width secured to both the elastic ribbons. The composite elastic band may have two stretch-limiting strips 4, 5 between which the elastic ribbon is sandwiched neither of which is folded over the outer edges of the elastic ribbon. The composite elastic band may be subsequently incorporated in a cover 7, formed by a wide strip of knitted or woven fabric which extends over one side of the band and is folded over the outer edges thereof with the free edges of the cover either spaced apart (Fig. 2) or mutually overlapping (Fig. 7, not shown). Said cover of knitted or woven fabric may be provided by any part of a garment, including the marginal edge thereof, folded over the outer edges of the elastic ribbon and strip material (Fig. 5). The cover may be secured to the composite elastic band by spaced longitudinally extending rows of stitches S extending through the composite elastic band and garment. The adhesive employed to secure the strip material to the elastic ribbon may be applied either in transverse strips closely spaced longitudinally of the elastic ribbon, or in plain or fancy patterns along the length thereof. In another embodiment the cover strip is formed by a marginal edge of the garment (11d, Fig. 12 not shown) which is folded over and neatened or finished off with blanket stitching (11e, Fig. 12, not shown). In a further embodiment the above mentioned marginal edge has a garment lining secured thereto for example by overlock stitching 11g.
