Abstract

1279703 "See-through" acrylic polymer compositions SYBRON CORP 29 July 1969 [8 Aug 1968] 38093/69 Heading C3P "See-through" acrylic polymer compositions comprise the reaction product of (a) 7-25% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, (b) 35-93% of at least one alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, (c) 0-30% of styrene or a mono- or di-alkyl derivative thereof and (d) 0-15% of acrylonitrile, wherein components (a) to (d) are reacted at 70-95‹ C. in the presence of lauryl mercaptan or other chain transfer agent and to the polymer reaction product is added an aqueous water-soluble base to adjust the pH of the composition to 7À5-10À0. The reaction product can be formulated into a "see-through" aqueous protective coating composition of pH 7À5-10À0 comprising (a) 50-100 parts by weight of the reaction product, (b) 0-50 parts by weight of an alkali-soluble resin, (c) 0-3 parts by weight of a halofluorocarbon resin, (d) a coalescing agent in an amount of 0-30% by weight of polymer and resin solids, and (e) a plasticizer in an amount of 0-30% by weight of polymer and resin solids. The polymer reaction product is preferably prepared in aqueous emulsion using a catalyst system comprising ammonium persulphate, cumene hydroperoxide, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and, optionally, diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide. The reaction product may be converted to metal carboxylate form by treatment with a salt, e.g. Zn(NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 to produce a zinc carboxylate form. In the protective coating compositions the alkali-soluble resin may be a styrene-maleic anhydride resin, and a polyethylene or wax emulsion may also be included. Coalescing agents specified are Carbitol, methyl Carbitol, mono- or di-ethylene glycol, ethyl or methyl Cellosolve, 2-pyrrolidone and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone ("Carbitol" and "Cellosolve" are Registered Trade Marks). Triethoxyethyl phosphate and tributyl phosphate are examples of plasticizers.
