Abstract

1279510 Compacting refuse D R LIGH 30 Oct 1970 51738/70 Heading B8C A refuse compactor comprises a housing 1 having an internal chamber 2, a circumferential wall and spaced end walls 4, 16 bounding the chamber, a compacting head 6 arranged for sliding movement therein, a door 3 in the circumferential wall, means for advancing the head to compact refuse between the head and one of the end walls and guide means 7, 8 associated with the head for preventing tilting of the head during advancement thereof. As shown, the head C is actuated by an hydraulic piston-andcylinder device 14, 15 which is controlled by an electrically operated pump 18, control valve 19, pressure limiting device 20 and a safety switch 29, which prevents operation of the device unless the door 3 is closed. In a similar arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the door is provided with a platform supporting a bag for the refuse which is moved into the chamber 3 as the door is closed. The bag is fed through a funnel (22) hinged to the extension of the housing above the door. In both embodiments a trough may be provided to collect any liquid expressed from the refuse and the compactor may be provided with legs.
