Abstract

1279484 Zeolites W R GRACE & CO 19 June 1969 [19 June 1968] 31012/69 Heading C1A A crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite is made by adding, to an aqueous mixture of alkali metal hydroxide, silica and alumina or materials which, under the reaction conditions provide these, 0À1-10 wt. per cent (based on the weight of theoretical yield of zeolite) of zeolite seed particles which are amorphous to X-rays and are not more than 0À1 micron in size, and heating the mixture for 5 minutes to 4 hours. The starting materials may be soluble sodium silicate, sodium aluminate, silica gel, silica sol, alumina gel or aluminium salts. The seed particles, need not be identical in composition to the zeolite being prepared. The heating or reaction step may be conducted at uniform temperature, e.g. 60- 110‹ C., or the reaction mixture may be aged at e.g. 20-40‹ C. for 10 mins.-24 hours before heating at 40-110‹ C. for 5 mins.-4 hours. The preparation of X and Y type zeolites (synthetic faujasite) is exemplified. The seed particles have the composition 0À9Œ0À1 Na 2 O : Al 2 O 3 : 2À3-2À7 SiO 2 and may be made by the techniques disclosed in Specifications 1,223,592 and 1,208,978 using a decreased ageing period.
