Abstract

1279441 Bag making machines FMC CORP 11 Sept 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 44793/69 Heading B5D [Also in Division F2] In a machine for making bags from thermoplastic sheet material, the material is fed intermittently to, and is engaged by, a heated reciprocating cutting and sealing device, this device being held in an inoperative position if the feeding of the material is interrupted. As shown in Figs. 1A and 1B the material W which has been folded longitudinally on its centre line, or slightly to one side of its centre line if a lip is required at the bag mouth, is fed to mechanism 30 which forms a gusset at the bag bottom. The material then passes to accumulating rolls 44, 48, to a hole punching device 58, a scanner 72 that identifies markings on the web of material, to intermittently operated draw rolls 84, to the sealing mechanism 104 and to delivery belts 114 116 that transfer the bags to corrugating, rolls 134 and to a slow-down mechanism 136 which delivers the bags to a stacking table 118. Sealing.-A sealing knife co-operating with a sealing roll 106 is reciprocated vertically by a cam-operated push-rod 382 at the sides of the machine, the profile of the cam 108 being adjustable to alter the dwell period. If the feed of the web is interrupted a control circuit actuates a piston-and-cylinder device 484 which raises the knife from the top of the pushrods, see Fig. 21. The knife can be turned through 90 degrees and held in an out of use position by a latch 356. By adjusting bolts 400, Fig. 21, the penetration force of the seal bar can be altered. The knife is also raised automatically after a predetermined number of bags has been made. Draw rolls.-The nip pressure between the rolls 84 is adjustable by fluid pressure in devices 484, this allows for the extra thickness of material at one side of the machine due to the bottom gusset. The draw rolls are intermittently operated by a crank 322 and quadrant 326, and driven by shaft 110 and belt 546 from the main motor 540, Fig. 16. Conveyer belts.-The conveyer comprises a number of parallel side-by-side belts 114, 116, driven by a belt drive from a motor 140, Fig. 16. Motor 140 also drives corrugating rolls 134. A slow-down mechanism 136 is provided and ensures that the bags are momentarily gripped at the trailing edge before discharging to the stacking table 118. The speed of motor 140 is accurately adjusted by coarse and fine adjustment potentiometers. Roller 122 carrying the forward end of the upper belts 114 is oscillated by a linkage 124 through a cam 128, this accommodates any over-travel of the bags and prevents them wrinkling.
