Abstract
1279325 Microbiocidal/water repellant agent SANDOZ Ltd 14 Oct 1969 [15 Oct 1968] 50427/69 Addition to 1148235 Heading A5E [Also in Division D1] A microbiocidal water repelling agent contains a parts by weight of a penta-chlorophenyl ester of a fatty acid (C 6-22 ), b parts by weight of a paraffin which is defined as paraffin wax or paraffin oil, and c parts by weight of a dispersing agent "D" as hereinafter defined, the weight ratio of the components a:b:c being 5-50:10-50:20-50, said dispersing agent D resulting by the reaction of 1 mole of a hexa-methylol melamine, at least 80% by weight of which is etherified with an alcohol (C 1-4 ), with 1) a carboxylic acid (C 1-3 ) or a mixture of such acids, 2) 0.5-1.2 moles of a tertiary amine containing at least one hydroxyalkyl group (C 2-4 ) or of a mixture of such amines, and 3) 1-2.5 moles of a fatty alcohol (C 13-22 ) or of a mixture of one or more of such alcohols, with the proviso that in the case of a mixture one of the fatty alcohols may have 12 carbon atoms; and quaternizing the reaction product, said carboxylic acid or acids being used in an amount (in moles) equivalent to at least 80% of the amount (in moles) of said amine or amines but not in excess of 2 moles. The dispersion agent "D" is preferably quaternized with dimethyl sulphate; the preferred alcohol with which the hexa-methylolmelamine is etherified being methyl alcohol. The microbiocidal water repelling agent may be produced by melting in any desired order the components a, b and c at a temperature, preferably 60-70‹C, such that the component with the highest melting point is liquid and allowing the resultant melt to cool or stirring it into sufficient warm water to form a dispersion containing at least 38% by weight water. The aqueous dispersion may be used to impart a water repellent and fungus resistant finish to materials made of organic fibres, e.g. cellulose, wood or leather. A specific example refers to the treatment of a cotton poplin fabric.
