Abstract

1279110 Welding by pressure IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [29 Dec 1969] 63037/69 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] An aluminium or aluminium alloy conductor 10 is welded to aluminium or aluminium alloy 11, 11<SP>1</SP> to steel 12, 121 transition joints which are in turn welded to two lengths of steel rail. The transition joints can be formed by either friction welding or explosive bonding techniques and may have a bond area of 5 to 25 cm.<SP>2</SP> the aluminium or alloy portion of the joints preferably being more than 10 mm. thick and the steel portion more than 30 mm. thick. The transition joints may be made by welding or bonding two large area plates and then dividing the bonded plates into a number of small area portions to provide a number of the joints.
