Abstract
874,266. Welding by pressure. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Aug. 29, 1958 [Aug. 20, 1957], No. 26319/57. Class 83 (4). In making a cold pressure welded lap joint between two layers, the material at the area of overlap is subjected to at least two spaced spot indentations applied in opposite directions from each side of the joint and so arranged that the maximum reduction in thickness of the metal of each layer occurs at the weld nearest to the respective end of each strip. A tapered tool with rounded end is shown in Fig. 1, producing one of the welds, the lower layer T2 being much reduced at the weld and the upper layer T1 being only slightly reduced. Two tapes T 1, T2, Fig. 3, of aluminium, copper or aluminium-copper alloy have stepped overlapping ends with a thicker portion of one overlapping a thinner portion of the other and two spotwelds are made by indentation at B from above the thick portion of T1 and at E from below the thick portion of tape T2. Two sets of two spots may be made as in Fig. 5, from opposite sides or two sets of five spots may be made. The centre of each spot may be punched out leaving an annular weld.
