Abstract

1278993 Coated clay particles RANSBURG ELECTRO-COATING CORP 17 Oct 1969 [17 Oct 1968] 51104/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division D2] Particles of normally acidic clay are treated with an alkaline agent (e.g. Na 2 CO 3 ) to provide a pH in aqueous medium of between 7À0 and 8À5 and then coated with. a cationic surface-active agent, e.g. a quaternary ammonium chloride which has a C : N ratio of 10-30 : 1 (many specified). In the examples the surfactants were octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or a dialkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride in an isopropanol/water mixture which was sprayed on to tumbling clay. The particles may be used in bead form and, e.g., may be distributed in finely-divided form from the distributing heads of a gun-type device which imposes an electrostatic charge on the particles which are thereby evenly spread out over a wet paper web. The coated clay particles do not cluster or form slugs at the distributer heads.
