Abstract

1278587 Stands for scintillation counters WHITELEY LANG and NEILL Ltd 8 Dec 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 43919/68 Heading A4H [Also in Division G1] A support and scanning stand for Scintillation Counters F to investigate regional lung functions with radio-active gases comprises a main frame A, a vertically adjustable counter-balanced head B mounted on frame A for rotation about a horizontal axis 15 and including a scanning carriage C arranged for powered, guided, horizontal movement normal to axis 15, a pair of arms D extending from carriage C and carrying housings E for holding Scintillation Counters F. Head B is carried by a shaft 15 rotatable in a vertically displaceable structure 17 supported by flexible connectors 18 extending over pulleys 19 and connected to counterbalance weights 12. Head B is vertically adjusted manually and is locked at the required height by a hand wheel 13 in a slot 13a. A fail safe electrically controlled magnetic brake 20 controls rotation of head B. Head B is manually angularly adjustable when brake 20 is released, and this can only occur when carriage C is central relative to head B, carriage C then closing a switch to close the brake circuit. Carriage C is moved by a variable speed reversible electric motor 21 which transmits linear motion to the carriage by a lead screw (2, 3) Fig.2 (not shown). Adjustable limit switches are provided at each end of the travel path of carriage C. Carriage C is guided on shafts (24) Fig.2 (not shown) of head B, and screw (23) and shafts (24) are covered by extendible covers (25) Fig.2 (not shown). Each housing E is carried in a slideway 30 and can be moved towards or away from the other housing E by a lead screw 32 operated by a thumb wheel 32a or a hand wheel, a scale 33 being provided. One Scintillation Counter F in each housing E can be moved on a slide 34 towards or away from the other counter F in the same housing E by a lead screw 35 operated by a thumb wheel 36a or a hand wheel 36, a scale 37 being provided. Housings E may be interchanged for housings (E<SP>1</SP>) Fig. 4 (not shown) holding Scintillation Counters (F<SP>1</SP>) for the stationary investigation of a patient that are angularly and linearly adjustable by rods (42) on manual release of clamps (43). A bar (50) Fig.2 (not shown) having equally spaced notches (51) mounted in head B is in operative contact with a micro-switch mounted on carriage C for providing a series of electrical impulses at regular intervals.
