Abstract

1277984 Ship's sterns; rudders; skegs W H GERMAN 2 March 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 9852/70 Heading B7A B7S and B7V A ship's hull has a substantially flat-bottom maximum-draft section H, a stern sloping gradually upwardly and rearwardly from said maximum-draft section and an annular nozzle 15 secured to the stern closely and manually surrounding propeller 12 of the ship. A skeg 14 projects downwardly from the stern on each side of the hull and each skeg forms a forwardly extending streamline of an outboard rim of the nozzle. The ship's hull shown is designed to negotiate ice fields and the skegs reduce the risk of sucking in ice from near the waterline. The upper portion 20 of the nozzle is faired into the hull and an ice knife 21 is provided above each rudder 13 to protect the rudder stocks when backing into ice.
