Abstract

1277618 Coated paper BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 2 Oct 1969 [3 Oct 1968] 48427/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 C3 and D2] A paper is simultaneously impregnated and coated by applying to it a treating composition comprising per 100 parts by weight (pbw) of water (a) 15-250 pbw of an aminoplast precondensate and (b) 0.5-25 pbw of an aminoplast condensate which is swellable but not soluble in water and has an average swollen particle size not exceeding 100 Á, and which is still curable. Suitable precondensates (a) include urea-formaldehyde (UF) precondensates of U:F molar ratio 1:1.4-2.3 and melamine-formaldehyde (MF) precondensates of M:F molar ratio of 1:1.2-3.0, prepared at pH 7.5-9.5 and 45-60‹C, in aqueous solution. Suitable condensates (b) include UF resins of U:F molar ratio 1:1.4-2.2, obtained by spray-drying the precondensate above 100‹C. In Example 1 a 1:2 UF resin powder is added to an aqueous solution of a 1:1.8 UF precondensate and 1:2 MF precondensate mixture. In Example 2 a 1:1.8 MF resin powder is added to a 1:1.8 MF precondensate solution.
