Abstract
1277060 Muffle furnace GAS COUNCIL 29 Oct 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 53816/69 Heading F4B A muffle furnace for heating metal billets or the like comprises an open ended heat resisting tube 1 surrounded by and spaced from an insulating jacket 2, a burner 26 delivering hot gases to one end of the annular space 3 between the tube 1 and the jacket 2 and a flue outlet 5 at the other end of the space. The tube 1 has a delivery shoot 16 at the burner end and a charging trough 15 and pusher 14 at the other end. The tube 1 is sealed to an inner metal casing 6, and the shoot 16 and trough 15 project through an outer metal casing 7 spaced from the casing 6. A fan 29 driven by a motor 30 draws air through an inlet 33 and silencer 32 to the burner 26 and to the flue stack 5. Flow meters 37, 40 in the air and gas supply lines respectively are connected to the burner by flexible tubes 38, 41, so that the furnace proper may be tilted about trunnions 17 in bearings 18 on a wheeled frame carrying the fan, motor, and flow meters. Plates 25 fixed to the trunnions 17 have holes co-operating with pins inserted in holes in a cross-member of the frame to lock the furnace in any desired position between the vertical with the burner uppermost to the vertical with the burner at the bottom. The burner 26, which produces a high velocity flame may deliver into an involute chamber 4, Fig. 3, or several burners may be arranged to deliver gases tangentially into the annular space 3.
