Abstract

1276667 Cushions SOC ANON BELGE D'EXPLOITATION DE LA NAVIGATION AERIENNE 7 May 1969 [7 May 1968] 21925/69 Heading A4M A cushion 1 comprises a coherent resilient porous mass 2 which is enclosed within an airtight, flexible envelope 3 connected to a three position valve 5 which is connected via conduits 6 and 7 to the atmosphere and to an air-tight chamber 9 which is connected to a vacuum pump 10. The internal pressure of the cushion which is controlled by either connecting the envelope to conduit 6 or 7 may be maintained at any desired value by closing the valve. Cushions 1 may be located in the back (18) and seat (19) of an aircraft seat (15) Fig.7 (not shown), each cushion being connected to a three position valve 5 which is mounted on an armrest (20) and which is connected with the ambient atmosphere and a chamber 9 formed from a hollow frame of the seat. Several chambers 9 are connected to a common conduit (21) which is open to the low-pressure outside the aircraft when in flight and is connected to a pump 10 when the aircraft is grounded. A non-return valve (23) maintains the pressure in the chambers 9 when the aircraft is on the ground. Each seat and back cushion has a safety valve (25) which opens when the pressure of the ambient atmosphere is lower than that in the cushion.
