Abstract

1276468 Stabilizing pipe-tines SEA & LAND PIPE-LINES Ltd 30 April 1971 12407/71 Heading F2P A (subaqueous) pipe-line is stabilized by placing thereon a flexible weight 1 comprising an outer flexible skin containing a mixture of aggregate (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), and settable material (5), and allowing or causing the.settable material to set to form a solid weight. As des- .cribed, the weight 1 is made by laying polypropylene netting 3 and canvas (2) in a tray and pouring a mixture of hot bitumen and magnetite into .the tray. A layer (6) of polypropylene netting is laid over the mixture and further mixture added. Another layer (6) of polypropylene netting is laid and after a final layer of mixture the outer canvas and netting are wrapped round the filler and secured to form a bag by lacing with rope. The bitumen is plastic until immersed in cold seawater. In a further embodiment a mixture of magnetite and cement is used, the weight being set rigid subsequent to being wetted. Other settable materials may be used which rigidity after application of cold, of water, or after a lapse of time. It is stated that the plasticity of the weight when being applied to the pipe-line prevents accidental fracture of the pipe and allows the weight to contour the pipe.
