Abstract

1276305 Driving wheels of trailers C G KING 25 Feb 1970 [26 Nov 1968] 55927/68 Heading B7H A trailer has a drawbar 2 for attaching the trailer to a tractor, and a pair of driving wheels 5 connected through differential gearing 3 and a freewheel device to a drive shaft 6 adapted to be coupled to a p.t.o. shaft on the tractor. The differential gearing 3 is connected by a chain- and-sprocket reduction drive 15 to a shaft 11. A shaft 7 connected to the drive shaft 6 by a universal coupling 7 carries a driving element 16 having inclined teeth engaged by corresponding teeth on a driven element 17 which is slidably mounted on the shaft 11 and urged by a spring towards the driving element 16. Manual disengagement of the driven element 17 from the driving element 16 can be effected through a linkage 29, 30, 32 connected to a lever arranged within reach of the tractor driver. The freewheel device may alternatively be of the jamming roller or pawl-and-ratchet type, and a separate dog clutch or friction clutch may be provided. A pair of gearwheels may replace the chain drive 15, or the differential gearing 3 may be connected to the shaft 11 by a universallyjointed shaft.
