Valves DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 24 June 1969 [26 June 1968] 30405/68 Heading F2V An electrically-operated fluid-pressure reducing valve comprises a moving coil unit 32 carried in a magnetic structure 34 which provides a magnetic field across the gap 33, a nozzle 31 connecting with a source of fluid pressure through a fixed restrictor 41, an obturator 29 connected to the unit 32 to vary the fluid pressure in a space 38 between the restrictor and nozzle in accordance with the clearance between the obturator and nozzle, a pair of windings A, B forming part of the unit 32, and an electric supply having two circuits connected one to one winding and the other to the other winding so that forces are induced in the coil unit, and means for adjusting the current in one or both windings. In the embodiment described, the pressure in the space 38, together with that in and a similar space 37, moves spool valve 3 to control, e.g., a double-acting ram connected with the passages 12, 13 and supplied with fluid from a source connecting with a passage 14. In Fig. 3, windings C, D are wound on a moving coil unit 26, and two transistors 62, 63 form the output stages of an amplifier, the bases of which are supplied with voltages from a control signal source to vary the flow of current through windings A, D and B, C, disposed, respectively, in two separate circuits to produce opposing forces which move the obturators 24 and 29 and control the pressures in spaces 37, 38 respectively. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the two circuits are each fed by an amplifier, and if the supply to one circuit fails an automatic switch device switches to the other circuit so that control may still be provided.
