Abstract

1276151 Cellulosic membrane EASTMAN KODAK CO 1 May 1969 [3 May 1968] 22249/ 69 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] To produce a semi-permeable reverse osmosis membrane useful in desalinating water, a water-wet cellulosic semi-permeable membrane, e,g. of cellulose acetate, is dried by first contacting it with a water-miscible organic solvent (A) which is liquid in the range 5- 40‹C and is able to form a clear solution with at least 5% by wt of water, until at least 80%, preferably 90%, of the water is replaced by the solvent and then with a non-polar organic solvent (B) also liquid in the range 5-40‹C and which is able to form a clear solution with at least 5% of (A) until at least 70% of (A) is replaced by (B) which is then removed by evaporation and/or mechanical means. Bath (A) and (B) must be non-solvents for the membrane. Specified solvents are for (A), C 1 _ 4 alkanols and for (B) benzene, toluene, petrol ether, xylene, naphtha, diethyl ether, hexane and cyclohexane. The membrane may also be impregnated with a polyol (e.g. 5-70%) applied as a solution (e.g. 5-25%) in solvent (A). Specified are various glycols and glycerine. The wet membrane may be derived by casting a cellulosic solution followed by quenching in cold water. The wet film may be "tempered" in hot water before drying. Excess water and solvent (A) may be removed mechanically before contacting with solvent (B).
