Abstract

1357347 Coated thin membranes TRADE & INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 56772/70 Heading C7F [Also in Divisions B2 and H1] A thin permeable, but non-porous, membrane is made by blocking the pores of a porous substrate with a preferentially removable poreblocking material to give a smooth surface comprising both substrate and pore-blocking material, depositing on the smooth surface a permeable non-porous film, and removing the pore-blocking material. The porous substrate may be PTFE or polyethylene, and the poreblocking material may be ice, deposited by exposing the cooled substrate to water vapour, or a gum, a gel, or an inorganic salt, deposited from solution. The permeable film may be a sputtered PTFE film, and this may be subsequently metallised, e.g. with Pt by sputtering. A poreblocker such as ice is removed by heating; the others are removed using a solvent. The body so formed may be used as a fuel cell electrode.
