Abstract
1275987 Offshore structures COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE D'ENTREPRISES METALLIQUES 17 Nov 1969 [21 Nov 1968] 56164/69 Heading E1H A column 1 connected to a base 2 on the sea bed 3 by a universal joint 4 has a buoyancy compartment 6 and a compartment 8 wherein liquid hydrocarbon extracted from a well 7 can be stored, the compartment 6 being charged with a quantity of said hydrocarbon that is proportional to the quantity in the compartment 8 so as to tender the upthrust on the column substantially constant and thereby obviate excessive upward loading of the base and joint. When the hydrocarbon is being drawn from the well into the compartment 8 by a pump 9 through pipes 10, 11 a corresponding quantity of sea water is expelled through openings 12, and a proportion of the hydrocarbon enters the compartment 6 through conduits 13, 14 and valve 15 controlled by a servo-device 26 in accordance with electric signals from level-measuring means 21, 22. A pumping means 18 controlled by a servo-device 25 returns hydrocarbon to the compartment 8 when hydrocarbon is discharged from the latter through conduits 16, 17 to provide compensation for an equal quantity of water reentering the compartment 8 through the openings 12. A tubular shaft 32 for the pipe 10 may be replaced by tubular shafts disposed externally of the column, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown). Alternatively, several tubular shafts may be provided within the column. Sea water may be used to charge the compartment 6 (instead of the hydrocarbon). In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the column is fully submerged and the compartment 6 is replaced by an air-filled machinery-compartment 46 with access means 47 for a diver. A pocket 36 of compressed gas is provided above the liquid hydrocarbon 38 by a purification unit 42 associated with a pump 41 for the incoming hydrocarbon. A unit 45 renders the pressure in the pocket 36 constant while hydrocarbon is being received through a conduit 44 or discharged through a conduit 50. At similar arrangement may be employed in a column extending above the free-surface of the water, Fig. 7 (not shown). The means 47 may be replaced by an access and ventilation column pivotally attached to the head of the compartment 46, Fig. 9 (not shown).
