Abstract

127,570. Brosius, E. E. May 25, 1918, [Convention date]. Lifting-dogs.-Consists of a,device for charging and discharging ingots, billets, &c. The hollow arm or peel 2 is rotatably mounted in bearings 3, 7 suspended from the run-way of a crane &c., the bearing 7 being counterweighted at 37. In the forward end of the peel is rotatably mounted, by means of a hub 13, a casing 12, within which are rotatably mounted a guide-block 18 and a screwed sleeve 16. The sleeve 16 engages a screw 15 having at its lower end an eye 19 engaging the centre pin of toggle-links 21, 22 connected to tongs 27 mounted in slots in the guide-block 18. A bevel-wheel 17 screwed to the sleeve 16 gears with a bevel 29 secured to a torsion rod 30 rotatably mounted in the bearing 13 and carrying at its other end an extension 31 passing through the bearing 7. On the extension 31 is mounted a hand-wheel 32 and a ratchet-wheel 38 engaged by a pawl 39 mounted on the cranked end 40, Fig. 3, of a pa.wl lever, the arrangement being such that a. toggle action is produced which increases the locking power of the pawl. In operation, clockwise movement of the hand-wheel 32, by raising the screw 15, closes the tongs 27 on the ingot, rotation to allow release being prevented by the pawl 39 and a second pawl 44 and ratchetwheel 43 between the bearing 7 and the peel. If it is desired to turn the ingot in an horizontal plane, this is effected by further clockwise rotation of the hand-wheel, the effect of which is that the screw 15, being no longer able to rise in the sleeve 16, is instead carried round therewith, thus rotating the ingot.
