Abstract
1275646 Casting composite rolls GRIFFIN SA 12 June 1969 [12 June 1968] 29949/69 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A composite roll is made by centrifugally casting a shell 10 in a mould 2 having removable end discs 6, removing the discs 6 after the shell has solidified, bringing the mould to a vertical position and placing it between two complementary moulds 15 and 20 for the journal ends, and filling the cavity defined by the moulds and shell 10 via a pouring basin 24. A strainer 25 may be located between the pouring basin and the moulds. The shell 10 may be made by centrifugally casting one layer of metal and then centrifugally casting another layer of metal within it, the second layer being of the same material as that used to form the core of the roll. A flux may be applied to the inner surface of the shell 10 before removing the mould 2 from the means for rotating it.
