127,481. Broadhurst, H. M., Lamble, A., Peachey, S. J., and United Alkali Co. Sept. 19, 1918. India-rubber, halogenating.-In the production ,of a substance for use as a substitute for celluloid, leather, or the like by treating a solution of rubber with chlorine, or bromine and chlorine, the rubber is dissolved in benzene or a homologue. Chlorine is passed through the solution until the rubber has taken up approximately twice its weight of chlorine. The presence of catalysts is avoided. The hydrochloric acid produced is removed by heating, or neutralized, for example, i;y ammonia or lime.
