Abstract

1,274,766. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 8 Sept., 1970 [5 Sept., 1969], No. 44026/69. Heading B8R. Document feeding apparatus includes means for supporting a pile 1 of documents, e.g. a table 2, document feeding means, e.g. a suction drum 4, spaced from one end of the pile and separator means, e.g. a movable suction shoe 6, being operable to separate an edge portion of a document from the pile and to move it towards the feeding means, a knife 5 being movable into the space between the edge portion and the pile and sensing means sensing the thickness of said portion and withdrawing the knife and inserting it again when the sensed document thickness does not correspond with a single document thickness. The blade knife 5 and shoe 6 may be mounted on arms 13, 8 respectively, each pivotable about an axis 9 and urged anticlockwise by springs 14, 10 respectively. In operation, an electromagnet 15 is activated by a signal when a document is required to be separated and fed, to attract a metal block 16 on arm 13 thereby pivoting the arm clockwise retracting the knife 5 from its supporting position below the pile which thus allows the portion of the lowermost document not supported by table 2 to be attracted downwardly towards the suction shoe 6. This shoe may have a concave surface causing the sheet to buckle and facilitate prevention of double feed. The knife is then returned to its original position, the separated document being sandwiched between it and the shoe 6 which latter is then removed by pivoting the arm 8 via electromagnet 11. The document is thus attracted to the rotating suction drum 4 and, optionally, engaged by pinch rollers, not shown, and fed away past guide member 30 and pinch rollers 19 to a conveyer 18, e.g. rollers. The sensing means, e.g. a finger 22 connected to an inductor 24, senses the thickness of material separated and held between the knife 5 and shoe 6, and causes the knife to retract and return until a single document is separated. The suction drum may be rotated, through a clutch.
