Abstract

1,274,671. Ultrasonic dental apparatus. S. K. L. GOOF. 16 May, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 15608/68. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H2] An ultrasonic dental apparatus comprises a tip structure B, including a tool 10, and concentric tubular members 24, 29 defining an annular space 24a in communication with a cooling medium nozzle 21a, and a handpiece A, on which the tip structure is mountable, including a coil 14a of a transducer for vibrating tool 10 and mounted on a first tubular member 14 in the handpiece, a second tubular member 28 surrounding the first tubular member to define an annular space through which a cooling medium may flow to the annular space 24a in the tip structure B when the tip structure is assembled on the handpiece, and a switch 15 for the transducer including a manually operable actuator member 38 for the switch, provided on the handpiece A. The concentric tubes 24, 29 of the tip structure engage with O-rings 31, 30 in the handpiece to retain the structure and to seal the cooling fluid passages. Tool 10 is held between fastening member 26 and nozzle carrier 23 in a continuation 25 of the tubular member 29. Ring 27 seals the annular passage at the rear of the nozzle carrier. The tool 10 is rigidly secured to a cylindrical vibration transmitting member 12 to which is releasably secured a transducer core 13 of sintered particles of magnetisable material. The handpiece has a casing comprising front, rough, and rear, smooth, portions 36, 32. Front portion 36 has a shoulder F for abutting a corresponding shoulder S on the tip structure. At the rear of the front portion 36 is an annular groove 37a within which axially slides annular switch actuating member 38, which actuates microswitch 15 through a flat spring 39. Microswitch 15 is sealed from the cooling medium channels by O ring 42; the cooling medium passes through conduit 40 through the structure holding the microswitch from a supply pipe (16, Fig. 1, not shown).
