Abstract
684,486. Supersonic transducers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1950 [Aug. 17, 1949], No. 21442/49. Class 40 (iv). A supersonic magnetostrictive transmitter, especially for use in liquidfilled bore-holes, comprises a number of annular nickel discs 2 arranged in the form of a hollow cylinder 1, the length of which is large compared with the wavelength in water of the frequency used. The assemblage 1 is impregnated with thermo-setting resin and carries a toroidal electric winding 3 energized by an oscillator. The device is protected by a metal sheath 4 and is carried by sealing supports 6, 7 on a tube 5. The space 9 contains air and the space 8 contains a coupling medium which can wet or bond both the transducer and the sheath. Dimensions for optimum efficiency and strength are given within the limits imposed by the size of the apparatus.
