Abstract
1,007,695. Magnetostrictive transducers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 21, 1964 [May 28, 1963], No. 20945/64. Headings H3U and H4J. A magnetostrictive half-wave resonator comprises a first quarter-wave sub-resonator of magnetostrictive material clamped at a node of oscillation and a second quarter-wave subresonator tuned to the same frequency at the first, the two being attached at a node of the second but at a distance from a node of the first selected for maximum efficiency of transmission of energy. In Fig. 1 the first sub-resonator comprises a hollow tube 1 clamped at one end to a mass 6 and energized by a coil 2. The second sub-resonator is a rod 4 attached at its end to a rigid disc 7 secured to the inner wall of the tube 1. The amplitudes of oscillation are shown in the lower part of the Figure. The tube 1 is preferably of Co-Fe sheet cut at an angle of 45 degrees to the rolling direction of the tube. The rod 4 can be tapered so that the stress is the same at all points along its length. The device can be pulsed for acoustic irradiation of media.
