1,274,646. Cast in or injecting in vacuo. A. Y. STIRRAT. 24 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 35879/68. Heading B5A. In apparatus for encapsulating, impregnating, or moulding with a liquid resin gravitationally discharged or injected from a nozzle 4 sequentially into a plurality of moulds 17 located within an evacuated chamber 1, the moulds 17 are supported on a table 2 which is rotatable from a hand wheel 3 outside the chamber 1, and the nozzle 4 is mounted, via an arm 5, to a shaft 6 rotatable by a handle 9 outside the chamber 1, whereby the nozzle 4 and successive moulds 17 may be brought into alignment. Seals 18 are provided to seal the chamber 1 from the shaft 6 and hand wheel 3. The arm 5 comprises a part 5a pivoted at 20 to a projection 5b from the shaft 6 and which projection 5b, when the part 5a is pivoted in a clockwise direction, acts as a cam to pivot an arm 5c, at 21, away from the arm 5a and against a spring 25 to raise a nozzle valve 23 to permit discharge into a mould 17 of a resin supplied to the nozzle 4 at 24, by a flexible or jointed conduit 7 communicating with a container 8, at a pressure either above or below atmospheric but above that within the chamber 1. When the resin is gravitationally cast, the nozzle 4 is located above a mould 17 and the resin is discharged therefrom by pivoting the arm 5a on raising a rod 28, located within the shaft 6 and to which the arm 5a is attached by an arm 25 sealingly extending through a slot 26 in the shaft 6. When the resin is injected into a mould 17 under pressure, the nozzle is brought into sealed closing contact with the mould 17 by lowering the shaft 6, by means of a threaded engagement with a nut 11 which is urged against a support 16 by a spring loaded arm 14 and is rotated from a drive initiated by a switch 10 adjacent the handle 9. When the nozzle 4 abuts the mould, the part 5a is pivoted to open the nozzle and when the closing force overcomes the spring tension thereon, the arm 14 is raised by the nut 11 to actuate a switch 15 to halt the drive to the nut. The nozzle 4 may alternatively be urged against a mould 17 by a weight or fluid pressure. It is stated that the apparatus may be automatically controlled to apply the nozzle 4 to a mould 17 for a preset time, and thereafter lift the nozzle 4 from the mould 17.
