Abstract

1,274,577. Cooling I.C. engines. DR-ING. h.c.F. PORSCHE K.G. 17 Sept., 1970 [20 Sept., 1969], No. 44490/70. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F1] A cooling system for vehicles provided with a primary internal combustion engine 5 for the main drive and a secondary internal combustion engine 10 for driving auxiliary equipment, comprises a cooling circuit 1 for the primary I.C. engine and a cooling circuit 2 for the secondary I.C. engine, both of said circuits being connected to a common cooling radiator 6. The cooling circuit 2 of the secondary I.C. engine 10, together with gearing 11 has a supply line 12 which is connected to the supply line 3 of the cooling circuit 1 and a return line 13 which is connected to the return line 4 of the circuit 1. A transmitter 21 is positioned in the return line 13, which via an electric conductor 22, is used for controlling an electromagnetic control valve 23 of an hydraulic installation 24. In operation, if the I.C. engine 5 is heavily loaded so that the effect of circuit 1 is no longer adequate, electrically driven supply pumps 16, 17, 18 of the circuit 2 are operated by switching on the ignition switch of the I.C. engine 10. If however, in spite of the switching in of the cooling circuit 2, the cooling effect is still not adequate, the I.C. engine 10 is brought into operation so that the gearing 11 drives the supply pumps 28, 29 of the hydraulic circuit 24. The pump 29 draws the hydraulic fluid from the oil supply container 32 via the pressure line 34 to the valve 23 which is connected by the transmitter 21 to a ventilator motor 36 so that the hydraulic fluid reaches the motor 36 through the line 35. As a result the motor 36 is driven and the radiator 6 and with it the cooling fluid of the circuits 1 and 2 are additionally cooled by the fan 37.
