Abstract

1,274,515. Grenades and mortar shells. OREGON ETAB FUR PATENTVERWERTUNG. 16 June, 1969 [17 June, 1968; 13 June, 1969], No. 30449/69. Heading F3A. A grenade or.mortar shell comprises a bursting ing charge 14, a plastics main body portion 1 optionally containing metal particles 4, a rear part 8 carrying stabilizing fins 9 which are made of metal, glass-fibre reinforced plastics or any other material which is not permanently deformed on firing, and a metal screw-threaded member 6<SP>1</SP> for connecting the. main body and rear portions together. The: body 1 is formed of cellulose acetobutyrate with an internally threaded sleeve 2 of the same material. The connecting piece is centred by a bush 15 and is landed in the body 1. A propellant charge is contained in the rear portion 8. In other embodiments (Figs. 1-6, not. shown) the connecting piece is formed with circumferentially and longitudinally extending ribs and grooves to provide increased anchorage inthe plastics main body portion. To manufacture the shell or grenade, the main body portion is injection moulded around the connecting piece and left for 8-12 days-to allow for shrinkage. The screw thread is subsequently cut on the connecting piece and the main body machined along its rear face so that it is normal to the axis of the body and also around its circumference-to produce the required calibre.
