Novel compounds of formulµ wherein R<SP>1</SP> represents a methyl or ketalized acetyl group (as hereinafter defined), P 1 represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group and P 2 represents a hydrogen atom or P 1 and P 2 together represent an additional bond, Q represents a grouping of the formula R-CH = in which R represents an alkyl, phenyl, phenalkyl, alkylphenyl or alkoxyphenyl group; the alkyl and alkoxy groups containing from 1-7 carbon atoms, B represents the anion of an acid and the dotted bond can be hydrogenated are prepared by reacting a corresponding 5-hydroxy-5-(3- aminopropyl) compound [obtained by reacting a corresponding 5-ketone with an alkali-metal and treating the resulting alkali-metal compound with a 3-aminopropyl halide], a corresponding 5 - (3 - amino - 1 - hydroxypropyl) compound [obtained by reacting a corresponding 5-acetyl compound with formaldehyde and ammonium chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride] or a compound of the general formula with an aldehyde (e.g. benzaldehyde) and quaternising the resulting Schiff's base with a methylating agent such as methyl chloride, dimethyl sulfate, methyl mesylate, methyl benzenesulfonate or, especially, methyl tosylate at an elevated temperature. 1 - Methyl - 10,11 - dihydro - 5 - (3 - aminopropyl) - 5 - hydroxy - 5H - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene is prepared by treatment of 1-methyl- 10,11 - dihydro - 5H - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene- 5-one in liquid ammonia with sodium, then 1-chloro-3 -aminopropane and finally water.
