Abstract

1,274,140. Bleaching edible oils. PROCTOR & GAMBLE CO. 4 Sept., 1970 [4 Sept., 1969], No. 42471/70. Heading C5C. Refined edible oils are bleached by a process comprising: (a) deaerating a mixture of oil and absorbent and adjusting its moisture content to 0À05-0À25 wt. per cent; (b) adjusting the temperature to 200-400‹ F.; (c) passing the mixture through a bleaching zone for 0À5-30 minutes at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure in the absence of oxygen; and (d) filtering the absorbent from the oil; wherein either (i) the flow conditions in (c) are turbulent or (ii) fresh absorbent is mixed with the oil recovered and steps (b), (c) and (d), repeated 1-6 times. Preferably a two stage process is employed in which turbulent flow is used. The bleaching zone may be a vertical flooded column packed with Pall rings. The examples describe the bleaching of soybean oil with an acid-activated clay to a chlorophyll content of less than 0À1 p.p.m.
